Jonathan Davies: Wales trial is perfect preparation

JONATHAN Davies believes tonight's Wales trial is the golden opportunity to fine tune his midfield partnership with Jamie Roberts ahead of a rigorous examination out in South Africa, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Lions pair line up for the Probables and will be named in Warren Gatland's 31-man squad to take on the Springboks as long as they come through the Liberty Stadium encounter against the Possibles unscathed.

Davies believes the clash is the perfect tune-up before the June encounters with South Africa, who will profit from a warm-up game against a World XV.

"Jamie and I have to make sure we get the partnership going again," said the 26-year-old outside centre, who will move from the Scarlets to Clermont Auvergne next season.

"We have played together enough times to make sure we combine for the benefit of the team. We have to make sure our partnership keeps getting better and pushing ourselves because you can't rest on your laurels.

"We are not the finished article and probably never will be but as much as we can work together the better."

It is likely that head coach Warren Gatland will make just one change to the Probables backs when he names his starting line-up for the first Test in Durban on June 14.

Wing George North is absent because of Northampton's Aviva Premiership final against Saracens at Twickenham tomorrow and it is to Davies' relief that his deputy Jordan Williams has been shifted from the Possibles.

"I was glad when we acquired Jordan having played with him at the Scarlets and I don't fancy trying to tackle him," said the outside centre.

"He has shown all year how much of a threat he is with the ball. It's an opportunity for him and we just have to make sure we put him in those areas where he can show what he's got.

"I would just say Jordan has the most talent I have seen in the Scarlets squad with his ability, footwork and handling skills. Hopefully he can be something special."
