NEWPORT Titans record their first victory of the Welsh Conference season after a convincing 52-8 win against Cardiff Spartans.

The Titans started all guns blazing at in the capital and scored their first try within two minutes thanks to a great move by John Lavender and a successful conversion by Callum Rowland.

An error allowed Spartans to get their first touch of the ball from a scrum but promptly conceded a penalty, allowing Titans to run in another try through Dale Tucker, who would go on to score a hat-trick, and another successful conversion.

The Spartans hit back through Chad Willson to make it 12-4 but that was as good as it got for the hosts, who trailed 28-4 at the break and were a man down after a red card for dissent.

The Titans capitalised after the restart, running in three back-to-back 60-metre tries courtesy of Dwaine Bailey (2) and Craig Lewis.

Mike Roberts and Rhys Hendley also crossed while Rowland kicked eight out of nine conversion attempts in a superb win that left Titans coach Scott Bessant delighted.

"We stuck to our game plan and evidently it worked," he said. "We played extremely well as a team and showed that something definitely clicked. I am proud of the performance and excited for the rest of the season."

Titans, who were beaten by champions Torfaen Tigers on opening weekend, aim to make it two wins out of three when they host Cardiff Demons on Saturday (kick-off 2pm).

- Torfaen Tigers didn't get the chance to notch their third win on the spin because Valley Cougars were unable to raise a team.
