CHEPSTOW and Sudbrook 1sts warmed up for Saturday’s crunch derby with good victories at the weekend.

At Mathern Road, league leaders Chepstow – unbeaten in six league matches – posted 209-5 and then bowled Abergavenny for 149 to win by 60 runs.

“A great all-round performance from David Teague set-up an excellent win,” said Chepstow skipper Jason Dobbie.

“We are playing well as a team and different individuals are producing performances when they are needed.

“Alyn Franklin is batting well in the middle order and Tudor Morgan-Huggett is bowling extremely well this year.

“Saturday’s match against Sudbrook is massive for us as they have got the better of us over the last few years and we know we will need to be at our best to make it seven from seven.”

Meanwhile at Penarth, Sudbrook won the toss and made 208 which skipper Ross Lewis (99) conceded was about 20 or 30 runs short. Michael Martin weighed in with 41.

A fine bowling spell by Rob Thorn reduced Penarth to 33-7 with Thorn taking four wickets, supported by Jon Lewis and Mark O’Leary as Penarth stumbled to 107 all out, losing by 101 runs.

Skipper Lewis was delighted with his team.

“This was an excellent win which lifts us up to third in the league and will hopefully give us some momentum going into Saturday’s derby with Chepstow as we all know we have to be at our best if we are to beat an in-form Chepstow side,” he said.

“Hopefully, weather permitting, we will get the game on as it would be our first home game this season and the boys are really keen to play at home where we always fancy our chances against any team.”
