TOM Prydie will continue to be centre of attention as Newport Gwent Dragons attempt to avoid coming a cropper against Newcastle in the European Rugby Challenge Cup tomorrow evening, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Dragons aim to back up their stunning 38-22 victory against Stade Francais in Paris when they welcome the Falcons to Rodney Parade (kick-off 7.30pm).

But after a tough start to the Guinness Pro12 the squad are aware that one swallow doesn't make a summer.

"We have stayed level headed and not got ahead ourselves after Stade," said Prydie. "We know that it will be a tough game against a dogged Newcastle side."

The win at Stade Jean Bouin was achieved despite Prydie having to make his second appearance on the spin in midfield to cover injury victims Pat Leach, Jack Dixon, Tyler Morgan and Ross Wardle.

Prydie hopes that a short spell with 13 on his back will serve him well in the long term.

"It's been a different challenge for me and I have really enjoyed it," said the 22-year-old from Porthcawl.

"It has made me more aware of how the centres play and when I go back to 15 or the wing hopefully it can help me work a bit better with them.

"I've had a bit more ball and the hardest part has been getting used to the defensive system, but we are a team that blitzes aggressively so coming in from the wing helped in terms of that."

On Tuesday Prydie was named in Wales' 34-strong squad for the autumn internationals against Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa.

He will attempt to put pressure on the established back three of Leigh Halfpenny, Alex Cuthbert and George North.

"I know it will be tough to get in the side because they are great players while Hallam Amos and Liam Williams are also playing very well," said the five-times capped speedster.

"I am just glad to be back in the squad, I've been in the camp over the years and the coaches know what I am about so I will train hard and leave the rest down to them.

"It should be a good challenge this autumn and that's good with the World Cup around the corner, we want to test ourselves against top teams because it's a tough group with England and Australia."
