The penultimate race meeting of 2014 at Chepstow takes place on Saturday, December 6.

It will be a fun and sociable day, with a Christmas party theme. There will be live Irish music in the marquee bar and the ‘rodeo reindeer’ will be offering a festive challenge for those brave enough to give it a try.

There will also be great racing - this meeting often attracts top quality horses and we’ve made some changes to the card this year to further build the day. For the first time we will stage a Coral Welsh Grand National Trial worth £20,000 in prize money. Many horses have used this meeting in the past as a ‘stepping stone’ to the Welsh National, including last year’s winner and second Mountainous and Hawkes Point, and we’re delighted to see both horses entered again on Saturday.

We also stage the inaugural running of a novice chase in honour of the legendary See More Business. See More Business won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1999 and the King George in 1997 and 1999, and was one of the horses to put champion trainer Paul Nicholls on the map. See More Business died in July this year, and as a five time Chepstow winner and surely one of the best horses to ever grace our track, it seemed a great idea to stage a race in his honour.

See More Business made a winning hurdling debut at Chepstow in 1995 and the following year returned to win the Rising Stars Novice Chase. For the next two years he came back again to take the Rehearsal Chase, and he returned again in 2002 to take the race for a third time. The horse who finished second to him on this occasion was subsequent Welsh and English Grand National winner Bindaree.

It was fitting that See More Business’s final racecourse appearance was also in the Rehearsal Chase at Chepstow in 2003, when he finished fourth behind another old favourite Sir Rembrandt.

His eight time champion trainer Paul Nicholls trains not far from us at Ditcheat in Somerset. A little known fact about Nicholls is that he has even more local connections though - he was born in Lydney and educated in Alveston!

Nicholls has entered Minellahalfcentury in the race. Robert Stephens, the young Penhow trainer I wrote about last week, has entered his Templebraden and Peter Bowen’s popular horse Awaywiththegreys, already twice a winner at Chepstow, is also entered.

Gates open at 10.25am and the first race is at 12.25pm. The ‘Best Bet’ package includes grandstand and paddock admission, two drinks and a racecard for £25 (booked in advance). All of the away racing, including the Becher Chase meeting at Aintree and the Tingle Creek meeting at Sandown, will be shown on the big screens, making it a great day out for racing fans.
