CHEPSTOW Harriers’ women won the Gwent Leisure Centre League race held at Llantarnam School in Cwmbran on Sunday while the men’s team came second.

Ten teams from south east Wales competed in the event where the course looped around grassy fields, with one wooded section and a couple of steep muddy banks to negotiate. The men ran four laps of the course, covering a distance of approximately six miles, while the women ran three laps.

In the winning women’s team, in finishing order were Niki Morgan, Sarah Bell, Lisa Jeffrey, Jan Morris, Sophie Gilbert, Berna Cantwell, Joc Dodd, Teresa Tranter, Berta Havers, Jane Bayliss and Sue Ashton.

In the men’s team were Duncan Bell, James Blore, Matt Stott, Rich Matthews, Paul Dodd, James Tucker, Jonathan Carter, Matt Kitching, Paul Lidgett, Matthew Lawson, Rob Hook, Martyn Winser, Kevin Mcentee, Richard Newhouse, Andy Stott, Dean Barnett, Al Dobbs, Andy Bray, Geoff Cram and Geoff Bayliss.

The successes were particularly impressive given that many Harriers had taken part in the Rogueruns’ night race on Thursday, February 12 while on Valentine’s Day many had either taken part in the 5k race in Tintern to raise awareness of Toxic Shock Syndrome or the Pen Tir Drop fell race in Cwmdu.

Chepstow Harriers thanked Fairwater Running Club who put on the race at Llantarnam.

There is one race remaining in the league of five cross country races. This is being held in Lliswerry on Sunday, March 15.
