TORFAEN Taekwondo Club has fought off the competition to secure success in the Welsh Closed Championships.

Held at the University of Wales, in Caerleon on February 22, the club took home an impressive 16 gold, 15 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Gold medals went to Jasmin Levan (sparring), Sofea Levan (sparring), Maya Levan (sparring and patterns), Lauren Neale (sparring), Lauren Maddocks, (sparring), Cameron Hopkins (patterns), Elijah Pearson (patterns), Jade Lewis (sparring), Greg Harris (sparring), Taylor Davies (sparring) and Cameron Ferrie (sparring).

Meanwhile Lowri Jones (sparring), Fraser Morgan (sparring), Megan Farfarakis (sparring and patterns), Cara-Leigh Edwards (sparring), Ellis Harris (patterns), Jasmin Levan (patterns), Jack Heames (sparring), Kian Griffin (sparring), Jordan Constance (sparring), Jasmine Peploe (sparring) and Tomi Agbaje (sparring) took the silver medals.

Bronze medals went to Libby Morgan (sparring), Liam Neale (sparring), Lauren Neale (patterns), Jill Wallace (patterns), Grace Cole (sparring), Holly Davies (sparring and patterns), Maxine Gilmore (patterns), Phillip Daniels (sparring and patterns), William Davies (sparring), Scarlett Pearson (patterns), Catty Langford (sparring), Kieran Lane (sparring), Jack Heames (patterns) and Sofea Levan (patterns).

The tournament also gave the students the chance to take part in the synchonized patterns teams and sparring events. These have always been the favourite for the club and the students have always really well in it, said club instructor, Tao Levan.

In the synchonized team patterns event, Team Sofea and Kian and Team Megan and Lauren took the gold medals. Team Maya had the silver medal and the bronze medals went to Team Jasmines and Team Grace and Catrin. In the team sparring event, Team Cameron, Liam and Fraser and Team Lauren, Libby and Mollie took the gold medals. Team Cameron Ferrie and Team Freddie took the silver medals. Team George and Taylor and Team Megan, Lauren and Grace took the bronze medals.

Earlier in the month, the club also took part in the North-Wales Inter Club Championships at Deeside Leisure Centre.

Held on February 1, Maya Levan took home four gold medals (girls black belt patterns, sparring, musical patterns and speed kicking), Sofea Levan came home with one gold medal in sparring and silver medal in patterns, and Jasmin Levan also took home one gold medal from speed kicking, one silver in sparring and a bronze medal in the patterns.

The club is now working hard and looking forward for the English Championships, which will be held in Worcester Arena on March 22.

The club trains every Monday (Cwmbran Stadium), Thursday (Cwmbran Fairwater) and Tuesday and Friday (Pontypool Active Living Centre).
