TORFAEN sides experienced mixed fortunes in Welsh League football last weekend, writes Terry Daley.

Competing in Division Two, Croesyceiliog achieved a surprising 2-1 win away to Undy Athletic. As a result, Croesyceiliog leapfrog Risca United into tenth spot.

Undy took the lead before the break through Gyles Thompson, but goals afterwards by Jack Wellington and Jamie Arnold earned the visitors the win.

Cwmbran Celtic entertained Barry, who began with a bang with two goals in the opening seven minutes – first, when a Jamie Bradford corner evaded everyone and in the first 60 seconds, and then when Ryan Evans scored at another flag-kick, after home goalkeeper Giles Cutlan had done well to initially parry a close-range shot.

The home team, though, managed to gain a foothold on 23 minutes as Luke Lewis fired in after visiting goalkeeper Dan Bradley could only push out a deflected Dominic Connor cross.

Manager Della Cheedy’s men maintained the pressure and were duly rewarded on the hour mark, when Bradley’s weak punch-out of a Luke Jones lob was headed into an unguarded net by Owen Cook.

The 2-2 draw, Celtic’s eighth in 17 league outings, means they slip to seventh. They are in action again tonight (Wednesday), when they host Margam-based Tata Steel at Newport Stadium.

In Division Three, Panteg beat visiting Cardiff Grange Harlequins 5-2. Panteg’s goals were posted by Jon Butcher (2), Tom Wise, Luke Duke and Luis James as they moved up a place to tenth of 19.

Croesyceiliog also play tonight, away to Caldicot Town, while Panteg are away against Tredegar Town. The kick-off is scheduled for 7.15pm.
