CWMBRAN U13s travelled to Brecon RFC, where the sun may have been shining as the team arrived, but all changed by kick off as the weather turned windy and wet alternating between sleet, hail and heavy rain.

Cwmbran hadn’t played a game for four weeks and Brecon didn’t give them time to settle down, going on the attack straight from first kick.

Cwmbran held their composure stemming the initial onslaught and sending Lewis Bates across field and down the left wing to score an unconverted try.

Cwmbran started to show some style slickly moving the ball through the hands out wide to Bates to run down the left wing to score again, converted by Joel Doughty.

Cwmbran backs set off on another flowing move with Bates making a break down the left wing and passing back inside to Will Reid to score an unconverted try.

The cold and wet started to tell as Cwmbran seemed to lose their composure and started missing tackles with Brecon finding gaps around the fringes which lead to a converted try just before half time.

As the second half got underway Cwmbran again found themselves under pressure with Brecon breaking through around the fringe of the scrum due to poor Cwmbran tackling for a converted try.

A kick through from Cwmbran and chase down the left wing by Bates led to his third try of the day.

Brecon showed they were still in the game when they broke through around the blindside of a five-metre attacking scrum, thanks to poor Cwmbran tackling, for an unconverted try. Cwmbran didn’t help themselves by too often kicking away good possession instead of taking the game to Brecon, in what was an evenly matched game.

Brecon again went on the attack and soon put Cwmbran under pressure by winning another five-metre attacking scrum. However Cwmbran defence this time held firm for a narrow 22-19 victory.
