TORFAEN teams were in Welsh League football action on the weekend, writes Terry Daley.

Croesyceiliog were in action on Friday night but were trounced 4-1 away to Aberbargoed in Division Two.

Nick McGrath scored what transpired to be a consolation for the visitors, who drop one to eleventh in the table.

In the same league, it was sixth versus eighth as Cwmbran Celtic entertained Risca United. It finished in a 1-1 draw, the Torfaen side's tenth in 20 outings. It may have been a little harsh on the visitors.

The game failed to ignite from the very off - except for a 21st-minute midfield clash between Celtic's Luke Thomas and Risca's Josh Hales which ended with both being straight red-carded.

Risca deservedly held a 1-0 interval lead thanks to a fine goal from striker Tony Willis, who strode onto a through ball before beating goalkeeper Giles Cutlan at his near post with 11 minutes of the first period remaining.

After the break, Cutlan prevented his side from going 2-0 when he made an outstanding, one-handed save onto the bar to deny Aaron Colwill's header.

And with time running out, Risca paid the price when Celtic's Owen Llewellyn tapped in from close range after another substitute, Sean Feeley, has headed into his path.

Parity means Celtic, whose goal was their 500th in the Welsh League, and Risca trail Aberbargoed by one and five points with the latter having played one more game.

In Division Three, Panteg remain in ninth place after a 1-1 away at Caerau (Maesteg), where Tom Wise was their scorer with a brilliant 35-yarder - although they dominated enough to have emerged winners.

Croesyceiliog were due to play Llanwern away last night, after the Free Press went to print.
