THE research conducted by Southampton University into the correlation between hyperactivity and diet (May 25) could, if extended to secondary-age children, provide a solution to the problem of anti-social behaviour among teenagers, in one fell swoop. Drinks machines in schools provide a ready source of the

E-numbers identified by this study as causing hyperactivity, and teachers have voiced concerns for years about deteriorating pupil behaviour, particularly after breaks and lunchtimes.

It is not difficult to see a link between the consumption of

E-numbers and some forms of anti-social behaviour, especially in teenagers. We do not need another university study: the evidence is there. Remove drinks machines and you will obviate poor behaviour.
