BBC News and the American ABC News network have joined forces to

create the world's biggest radio and television news-gathering

operation.

Reporters and production crews will co-operate throughout the world

with exchanges of material news coverage plans.

No financial details of the agreement were being revealed but the BBC

said it represented an expansion, and the move would not result in any

job losses.

''It will lead to greater efficiencies in the field and give us access

to an even wider range of news material from across the globe,'' said Mr

Tony Hall, managing director of BBC News and Current Affairs.

The BBC has more than 50 foreign bureaux and ABC programmes go to 48

countries.

ABC News president Roone Arledge said: ''This partnership brings

together two of the leading news-gathering organisations in the world

and both will benefit enormously.''

The alliance for 24-hour global coverage will use state of the art

satellite technology to produce up to the minute news.
