Philadelphia, Friday

DOCTORS today completed an operation to separate Siamese twins but one

of the girls died.

Dr James O'Neill, of the Children's Hospital, said Angela Lakeberg was

in a stable condition but her sister, Amy, had died.

''Amy did not have enough heart tissue in order to provide survival,''

he said. Although Angela was comfortable, it was too early to predict

the longer-term outlook.

The twins were born on June 29 joined at the chest and sharing a heart

and a liver.

O'Neill said that Amy died after the reconstruction of about

two-thirds of the heart when ''a disconnection was performed''. He said

that Angela could have a very high quality of life if her heart

continued to function.

Angela's condition could be likened to ''a heart attack victim who is

coming along well''.--Reuter.
