NIGEL Mansell is ready to commit himself and his family to an IndyCar

future in America -- ruling out a return to Formula One.

After his victory in the New England 200, Mansell suggested he was

interested in signing a new contract with the Newman-Haas team for next

year and beyond.

Formula One's Italian-owned Benetton team are reported to be ready to

tempt Mansell back to the Grand Prix circuit with a #6m offer. But the

Briton said: ''As for next year, I am still in confidential negotiations

with Carl Haas, but I will say it looks good for staying here.''

Celebrating his second successive oval win on the day of his fortieth

birthday, he said: ''This is a great series. The IndyCars, the public,

the media, professional and competitive racers . . . we all try to put

on a great show. I think it is wonderful.''

Mansell knows his future is now likely to be with the top team in

IndyCar racing and his recent surge in form has been coupled with

increased support from sponsors Texaco.

After just 10 IndyCar race starts, Mansell has now recorded four wins,

one second place and three thirds to take control of the championship

with 144 points to Emerson Fittipaldi's 119 for the Marlboro

Penske-Chevrolet team.

His winning margin on Sunday, in the eleventh round of the 16-race

championship, was only four-tenths of a second, a fact which proves he

has learned to master both ovals and the brinksmanship which are so

important to the IndyCar show.
