* PETER Butler, the world class winner of 23 tournaments, turned back

the clock at Huddersfield Golf Club, Yorkshire, yesterday when he took

the lead in the Lawrence Batley Seniors with a 65, only one stroke

outside the course record.

With one round to play 61-year-old Butler is five under par on 135 and

has a two-stroke lead over Ireland's Michael Murphy. Hotly pursuing

those two on 139 are a trio consisting of Scottish Ryder Cup player

George Will, Welsh Ryder Cup player and former captain Brian Huggett,

and England's Hedley Muscroft.

Butler had 10 single putts yesterday, and at the seventeenth holed

from a bunker for a 2, the fifth of his six birdies. Although he was in

sand five times he did not drop a shot, finishing his round with an

18-foot putt for a birdie 4.

Murphy, who started at the tenth, dropped a stroke when he

three-putted the short thirteenth. He made an eagle 3 at the third,

where he sank a 20-yard putt, but finished with successive bogeys. Will,

also starting at the tenth, ended his round by sinking a 60-foot putt

for a birdie 3 at the ninth.

''That's the longest I've holed for ages,'' grinned Will, who had

dropped a shot at his second hole before hitting back with an eagle at

the 491-yard sixth.

The major blemish in his round came at the sixteenth, where an awkward

stance in a bunker prevented him from getting close to the hole, and

caused him to three-putt for a double bogey 6.

John Hamilton lamented a 77 which put him on to 150, and Jim McAlister

took 76, largely the result of errant tee-shots. Leading scores (British

unless stated):
