STENHOUSEMUIR, Forfarshire, and Stirling County yesterday booked

semi-final places in the Whyte & Mackay Scottish Cup. And, on what was

Cup Sunday, there was success too for Freuchie and Grange in their

respective competitions.

Forfarshire brought Berwick's giant-killing Scottish Cup run to an end

at Forthill, the county side winning by five wickets.

Tim McCreath batted through for Berwick, finishing on 113 not out from

240 for five. And when Forfarshire were reduced to 31 for three, another

surprise looked on.

Mike Cousin and John Phillips though, settled the nerves with a

fourth-wicket stand of 113, while Stuart Garden and Angus Hay settled

the outcome with an unbeaten 58 for the sixth wicket.

At The Tryst, favourites Stenhousemuir beat Carlton by nine wickets

with almost 19 overs to spare.

While Graham Gardner was the best of the home attack with four for 24

as Carlton reached just 126, Colin Howden bowled only two overs, whipped

off after the second proved expensive in runs. However, his first was

costly for Carlton, Howden removing both Bryn Lockie and professional

Dave Lamason.

Stenhousemuir's counter was led by Scotland opener Iain Philip, who

hit an unbeaten 85.

An opening stand of 126 between Jon Taylor (87) and Kerr Henderson

(71) put Stirling County on their way to a big total against West of

Scotland at Willaimfield. Bruce Russell added 43 with the bat to push

County to 232 for four, before proving equally productive with the ball.

West seemed set for the chase, but lost Amritash Agrawalla for 29,

followed by Alistair Storie, former Scotland captain Russell removing

the present national skipper on 22. Russell ended with four wickets,

Willie Morton with three, and Stirling with a 70 run victory.

Freuchie triumphed again in the Scottish final of the National Village

Cup, beating Glendelvine by six wickets.

Fourth wicket pair Stephen Langton and Steven Tait rattled 108 for

Glendelvine to leave the Fifers needing 148 to win. That was achieved,

Scott Birrell (61) and Scott Gourley (40 not out) adding 98 together to

steer Freuchie through to the national event, with an away tie next

Sunday against North Yorkshire outfit Sessay.

Grange put their Scottish Cup blues behind them to beat Ayr by 51 runs

in the final of the Abbot Ale Cup. Set 206 to win, Ayr struggled

throughout, despite 68 from Alan Simpson.
