FORMER England international cricketer Ted Dexter yesterday won the

top scratch prize in the Royal and Ancient Golf Club's autumn medal

meeting over the Old Course, St Andrews. Dexter carded a one-under-par

71, one clear of Avon member Peter Hare, who was bidding to win the King

William IV Medal for the second year in succession.

Hare did, however, win the club's gold medal as runner-up plus the

George Glennie Medal for the leading scratch aggregate of 147 for the

Spring and Autumn meetings.

The new captain of the R and A, Aberdeen-born Gordon Jeffrey, aged 59,

who now lives in Southport, yesterday played himself into office in

traditional fashion by driving off the first ball -- a long drive down

* ANDREW Oldcorn won the Murrayfield/Crammond Rotary Pro-am yesterday

with a course record 61 at Newbattle featuring eight birdies and no
