A COUPLE whose son died of heart failure have reached a milestone in their campaign to save the lives of others.

Dawn and Brian Stokes are finalising plans to get a resuscitation machine put in the building which houses Eastwood Swimming Pool and Theatre - the fifth heart-start kit they've funded.

Since their 14-year son Craig collapsed and died in February 2005 they have raised £10,000 to install the life-saving defibrillators in public places.

They believe Craig could have been saved if one of the kits had been close to the scene of the tragedy.

Dawn and Brian have already put the £2000 pieces of equipment in Craig's school, Williamwood in Clarkston, as well as in St Ninian's High, Stamperland Parish Church and Netherlee Parish Church.

The money has also helped provide training for staff in using them.

The couple, from Netherlee, are in talks with East Renfrewshire Council about installing the fifth at Eastwood Leisure Centre.

Dawn, 45, said: "There are a lot of things based there so we thought that would be a good place to have it. We are always on the lookout for somewhere to put one.

"We just think it's really important. I think it's ridiculous in this day and age that we do not have these machines in public places.

"Down south they are everywhere but up here not all ambulances even have them."

The couple's drive to buy the machines started after Craig collapsed while out with friends in Clarkston Road.

A sea of flowers was left at the spot where he collapsed.

Dawn and Brian now plan to identify playing fields where they could install further machines for sports teams.

Dawn, a communications support worker at Motherwell College added: "Craig would be pleased that something good came out of all this."

The fund was recently boosted by a dance at Stamperland Community and Social Club which raised £660.

An East Renfrewshire council spokesman said: "We're grateful to Dawn and Brian for providing defibrillators in schools.

"They are keeping Craig's memory alive and, by providing a defibrillator for Eastwood Leisure Centre, they will be helping us enormously in our work with the public."
