YOUNG athletes tipped for the top are being offered help to balance studies and training thanks to a new scheme.

Tennis star Jack Hanlon, 12, figure skater Claire Henry, 14, footballer Aidan Walker, 13, and Giffnock North Club hurdler Paula Houston, 13, are among 40 budding sport stars at St Ninian's High School in Giffnock to take part in the Talented Athlete Programme.

Morag Carmichael, sports co-ordinator and PE teacher, has adapted a programme piloted in England by the Youth Sports Trust for use in the East Renfrewshire school.

She said: "This scheme is exactly what we need, as far too often talented athletes must choose between sport and studies, and as a result we lose potential talent."

The youngsters involved in the programme already represent their sport at regional and national level in ice-skating, football, tennis and track events.

They will receive help academically and with their sport and a select group will also be assigned a mentor to liaise with teachers, parents and coaches.
