SOUTH African utility back Carl Meyer has expressed his gratitude to Ebbw Vale after fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional rugby player with Newport Gwent Dragons.

The 23-year-old from Pietermaritzburg, the city near Durban that Kevin Pietersen hails from, has earned a deal with the Rodney Parade side after catching the eye with the Steelmen.

Meyer, who is comfortable at full-back, centre and fly-half, made his Dragons debut against Exeter in the LV= Cup and went on to make four more appearances, scoring a cracking match-winning try against Ulster and featuring against the Scarlets at the Millennium Stadium.

After appearing in the second half of the Steelmen's Swalec Championship title success he returned to Eugene Cross Park this season on a three-year sporting visa, making it clear that he wanted to catch the eye of pro teams.

"I've come over here to pursue a career in rugby and if I get a chance to play professionally then I will grab it and go from there," said the former Sharks Academy prospect at Bedwas' Bridge Field in December.

"I've come to chase a dream knowing that Ebbw Vale is in the Dragons region and hoping to get an opportunity."

He got one and grasped it, impressing the Dragons management sufficiently for them to offer a deal.

The popular South African has penned an open letter on evrfc.co.uk to express his thanks to the Steelmen, writing: "Words can't describe how grateful I am to be a part of such an amazing club.

"First, I would like to thank (chairman) Jon Jones, (head coach) Jason Strange, (president) Mark Powell and all those who have helped to get me to come over to Wales and bless me with the opportunity to play for this great club.

"Because of the support, coaching and players I have felt right at home and been able to play some of my best rugby, which is one of the reasons I am blessed with the opportunity today to play professionally, so thank for making me feel at home and part of the family.

"Second, I would like to thank (team manager) Andrew Phillips, Rev Geoff Waggett and his wife as well as Paul Thomas for opening their homes to me and allowing me to stay with them I am truly grateful for your hospitality.

"Thirdly I would like to thank the Ebbw Addicts for all the support and help you have given me. You guys always go the extra mile and make every game feel like a home game and, no matter what the result, you are always behind the boys.

"You all are an important part as to why this club has been so successful, so thank you again for all you do.

"Last but not least, to all the boys, I have had some great memories with you guys this past two seasons but one of the best feelings is putting on the red, white and green jersey every weekend and having the honour and privilege to take the field with all of you."

Meyer could well return to Ebbw next season if not named in a matchday squad by the Dragons and if he is in need of game time.
