THE talented young Newport Gwent Dragons trio of Hallam Amos, Tyler Morgan and Jack Dixon are likely to get the chance to push their World Cup causes when Wales take on Ireland next weekend.

Warren Gatland and his coaching team have put 47 players through their paces in training camps in Switzerland and Qatar this month.

They will finally take to the field against the Six Nations champions at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).

A number of Wales’ squad are shoo-ins for the final 31 at England 2015 and it is the inexperienced ‘fringe’ players who will take to the field in Cardiff.

That is likely to mean opportunities for the young Dragons trio of wing Amos, whose solitary cap came against Tonga in 2013, and the uncapped midfield duo of Morgan and Dixon.

They will hope to impress before a first cull of players with Gatland trimming his squad from 47 down to 38 at most as rugby preparations intensify.

“As coaches it’s hard to work with a squad of 47,” said Gatland. “It’s a little bit more manageable when you are focusing on the rugby elements of the game.

“A number of younger players will have an opportunity against Ireland to show what they have done in the last few weeks and push their claims for selection in the squad.

“As a coach it’s the hardest part telling players they will miss out on the squad.

“When you have seen players put in as much as some of these individuals and then let them down, it’s an emotional experience. They are incredibly disappointed and you are feeling for them.”

Defence coach Shaun Edwards, however, stressed that those that receive bad news will still be important to the Wales squad after being put through their paces in pre-season.

“Those players, if we get an injury, are ready and have the fitness levels we require,” said the rugby league legend.

“If some of those so-called back-up players are called up we know they have had that pre-season, we know they have done that hard work, we know they are ready.”

Gatland will play his more seasoned campaigners in the second clash against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, August 29, two days before he names his final 31.
