COACH Nick Wakley says Newport Gwent Dragons are in for a shock if they start thinking about revenge against Gloucester at the Singha Premiership 7s finals night, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Dragons will attempt to go one better at the Twickenham Stoop after being edged out by the Cherry and Whites last summer.

They could well face sevens kings Gloucester – who are aiming for a hat-trick of titles – in the semi-finals but first they have to get past Sale Sharks.

"If we come up against Gloucester it will be a big challenge because they are a strong side but sevens is a funny game and you cannot afford to look too far ahead," said Ebbw Vale coach Wakley, whose expertise in the shortened game is being used by the Dragons for the second season running.

"There are some good teams and some big names in this tournament but anybody can beat anybody so we just have to focus on the challenge in front of us.

"That's Sale and they are an old side of mine and it will be nice to go up against their coach Pete Anglesea (his old teammate).

"They have a few dangermen in their side and I was impressed with their nine James Mitchell, so we will need to keep him quiet."

The Dragons head to London with a strong squad featuring senior regional experience in the shape of captain and full-back Geraint Rhys Jones, wings Matthew Pewtner and Ashton Hewitt, fly-half Angus O'Brien, flankers James Benjamin and Ollie Griffiths and scrum-half Luc Jones.

Geraint Rhys Jones, Pewtner, O'Brien and Ebbw Vale flanker Luke Crocker have represented Wales at sevens while Newport winger Elliot Frewen was player of the round when the Dragons triumphed in the Welsh leg at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

"I am really happy with the squad," said Wakley."James and Angus have joined us again after playing in last year's tournament while Ashton will be determined to impress.

"There is a lot of competition on the Dragons wings and he knows that a big performance this evening will do his chances the world of good."

Gloucester, who are captained by Gwent's Steph Reynolds, are the team to beat but Wasps will be fancied to take their crown given that they include England aces Christian Wade and Elliot Daly.
