DIRECTOR of rugby Lyn Jones was pleased Newport Gwent Dragons continued on their upward trend against Treviso – but admitted a dramatic improvement will be needed against the table-topping Scarlets on Friday.

The Dragons triumphed 19-12 against Treviso in the Guinness Pro12 at Rodney Parade thanks to a try by flanker Nic Cudd and 14 points from the left boot of fly-half Jason Tovey.

They were once again hindered by a high error count in enemy territory but, after defeats at Leinster and Glasgow, Jones is pleased to be able to work on their problems at their Ystrad Mynach training base on the back of a second success of the season.

“We are really pleased to win because Treviso have been causing problems for everybody they’ve played against,” he said.

“We cancelled out their threats out at the lineout and scrum and they didn’t score a try, which was pleasing.

“After two defeats there were lots of improvements and they are ongoing.

“We need to get to 25 points on the scoreboard – we had lots of good approach work again, it’s just not being finished off and it’s just a matter of time before we put things together.

“Errors are not always (costing) a try but it’s releasing the pressure that creates a penalty. There were four knock-ons in the 22 and it’s inexcusable.

“As long as we keep working hard and keep looking to improve, it will come.”

Next up is a Scarlets side who have swept to five wins from five thanks to their super last-gasp home win against Munster. Last season the Dragons produced a tepid display in a terrible derby out west, going down 26-13.

“The Scarlets are a very confident side,” said Jones. “They are playing good rugby and they are over the ball any way they can, so we know we have to play a little bit better than against Treviso.

“We need to pose them problems. Local derbies are great but last year’s performance there was really, really disappointing.”
