WALES forwards coach Robin McBryde has hailed the performance of novice loosehead Rob Evans in Dublin – but issued a warning that things will go up a notch in Cardiff this weekend.

The 23-year-old Scarlets prop produced an excellent performance when winning his fourth cap in the 16-16 draw against Ireland after getting the nod ahead of the legendary Gethin Jenkins.

Evans not only got around the paddock superbly in his 53-minute performance by making 15 tackles and carrying nine times but he produced the goods at the set piece along with regional propping pal Samson Lee.

"I was extremely pleased for Rob and Samson," said McBryde. "There were quite a few things thrown at them in the week leading up to the game, but, in fairness to both, they kept their heads down and focused on their own performances.

"They were outstanding on the weekend, contributing in the loose as well as the tight and showing that for young props they have bright futures. Their scrummaging came out of the top drawer."

McBryde, who was full of praise for referee Jerome Garces' handling of the scrum, knows that they face a huge test on Saturday against a meaty Scottish front row.

The Edinburgh trio of Alastair Dickenson, Ross Ford and WP Nel have established themselves as one of the most formidable units in the Guinness Pro12 while they will be backed up in the tight by the Gray brothers, Jonny and Richie.

"Scotland are a bit more settled as a unit and are quite experienced," said the Wales coach. "They are quite heavy and I thought they had a couple of tough calls against them against England. They'll be hurting."

The Scots have not won in Cardiff since 2002 while last year they were beaten 26-23 in Edinburgh.

"Last year was quite a close-run thing. They came at us with a good, effective driving maul, so we have to be on our guard with regards their tight play," said McBryde.

Wales name their team for the clash at the recently-renamed Principality Stadium at 11am. See southwalesargus.co.uk/sport for full details
