THE Football Association of Wales has turned down an approach from Premier League club Hull City to speak to Chris Coleman about their managerial vacancy.

As revealed on Saturday, Coleman is one of the candidates that Hull have targeted to replace Steve Bruce following his resignation last month.

The newly-promoted Premier League club have been looking for a successor to Bruce following his departure on July 22.

Coleman, who led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 last month, and former Watford and West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola have emerged as the favourites for the job.

The Wales boss has repeatedly said he wants to remain in charge until after the 2018 World Cup campaign and the FAW has said it "fully expect(s)" him to stay put.

In a statement the FAW said: "The Football Association of Wales can confirm that it has received an official approach from Hull City FC for the services of manager Chris Coleman.

"Following discussions amongst leading figures within the association the approach has been rejected.

"Chris Coleman signed a new two year contract in May 2016 ahead of the UEFA European Championships in France and the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

"Everybody at the FAW are fully focused on the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

"The first match is against Moldova in Cardiff on September the 5th.

"Chris Coleman will announce the squad on August 25th."

And reports in Italy on Monday said Zola, sacked by Qatari club Al-Arabi in June, had been the subject of an approach from the Tigers.

It is understood an appointment is edging near, with Hull, who open their 2016-17 Premier League campaign by hosting champions Leicester City on August 13, looking to have their new man in place by Wednesday.

Bruce, whose four years in charge saw Hull promoted to the Premier League twice and reach the 2014 FA Cup final, left following a breakdown in his relationship with the club's owners, the Allams.

Bruce's frustration grew as Hull failed to strengthen their squad this summer on the back of long-term injuries to his son Alex plus Allan McGregor, Michael Dawson and Moses Odubajo.
