BEDWAS chief Steve Law insists nobody at Bridge Field is getting carried away with the club’s start to the new season.

Law, whose side have won three of their opening four matches in the Principality Premiership, also reckons his men are “big underdogs” for tomorrow’s trip to Llandovery (2.30pm).

After a narrow defeat against Pontypridd, Bedwas beat Newport and new boys Merthyr on the road before victory over Neath last Saturday.

That triumph took Bedwas to third in the table, one point behind RGC 1404 and three adrift of early pacesetters Aberavon – the top two clash in Colwyn Bay tomorrow.

Reflecting on his team’s first month of the campaign, Law said: “No-one is getting too excited, definitely not me. Our feet are firmly on the ground as there is a long way to go this season.

“I wouldn’t say we are surprised at where we are. We had a really good pre-season and signed a couple of quality players to give our squad some depth.

“We’ve got some good competition in the squad and expectations are for us to be competitive, so surprised probably isn’t the right word. I’d say happy or excited.”

He added: “We’ll be big underdogs this weekend. With the squad Llandovery have assembled and points they are scoring then they will be favourites.

“They are a really good side and we go there with no expectations other than to put in a high quality performance in the hope of getting a result.

“We won’t go there with any complacency because it can hurt you if you get complacent.”

Meanwhile, reigning champions Ebbw Vale, with two wins in a row following defeat at Llanelli, visit Neath tomorrow (2.30pm).

Ebbw skipper Damien Hudd is glad to see the Steelmen really finding their feet as they bid to defend the title that was so memorably won at Sardis Road in May.

“It has been a bit of a mixed bag so far,” he said. “We lost our first game and then put in two half-decent performances against Newport and Bridgend.

“We are a bit short in midfield at the moment but we’re confident of making it three wins in a row this weekend and climbing the table.

“We’re looking for momentum to take into the rest of the season.”

Assessing the Welsh All Blacks, second row Hudd added: “They’ve signed a lot of players and we know they will be tough to beat.

“The Gnoll is always a difficult place to go and it seems to be a place where we don’t play that well.”

Greg Woods’ Cross Keys have recovered from a disappointing start thanks to back-to-back wins against Neath and Swansea.

Like Bedwas and Ebbw, Keys head west tomorrow as they face Carmarthen Quins (2.30pm), who like Keys have won two and lost two this season.

Two more clubs with the same win-loss records, Bargoed and Llanelli, meet at Bargoed Park (2.30pm), while Bridgend host Pontypridd and Swansea entertain Cardiff.
