A TRIO of talented Torfaen Warriors boxers recently travelled to Denmark for the HSK Box Cup and came back with a gold medal and two silvers.

Chloe Thomas took gold in the elite women’s bantamweight (51-54kg) final, beating home favourite Sarina Frederiksen 3-0.

From the bell she took the fight to her opponent with heavy body and head shots, leaving no doubt in the judges’ minds who had won.

It is Thomas’ third gold in a year after victories at the Golden Girl Sweden event and the Haringey Cup in London.

Crimea Jenkins won silver in the men’s 57-60kg category at under-17 level after he was beaten 3-0 in the final by Denmark’s Ali Aziz.

And Joel Manning also took silver in the under-17 light-middleweight (66-70kg) category, losing out 3-0 to experienced Irish fighter Jack Conroy in the final.

Manning was always up against it with a record of 22 bouts and 10 wins compared to Conroy’s 117 bouts and 105 wins, which includes a European silver medal.

But the Torfaen youngster made a fight of it and Conroy, who is off to the world championships next, and his coach congratulated Manning on his performance.

After returning from Hillerød, north of Copenhagen, coach Simon Weaver said: “Coming back with one gold two silvers is a great achievement.

He added: “Reflecting back on this tournament our biggest achievement was Joel Manning’s performance against a vastly qualified boxer from Ireland who is off soon to the world championships.

“I can teach people to box but guts and heart this comes and is in the boxer.

“He's proved to be a true champion and will realise this when he reflects on this trip he will realise what he has achieved even with this loss.

“Crimea I thought had done enough to win gold but we were boxing a boy from the hosts Denmark and they just pipped it but this was against a boxer with more than 50 fights and is part of the learning curve.

“And Chloe did what Chloe is good at – winning golds. That is three in one year and she is getting better with every fight.

“I know me and [fellow coach] Jon [Manning] are very pleased how our boxers have conducted themselves.”

Torfaen Warriors boxers will be in action in a special show at the Parkway Hotel with Cwmbran ABC on November 18.
