CROSS Keys stalwarts Chris Clarke and Colin Vernall have stepped down from their positions as secretary and chairman of the Principality Premiership club.

The duo have been at the forefront of the Pandy Park outfit’s rise from a struggling side to one pushing towards the top of the table in recent years.

They also saw Keys win the first major piece of silverware in the club’s history by beating Pontypridd in the final of the Swalec Cup at the Millennium Stadium in 2012.

However, they have now decided to hand over the reins with the club having the benefit of the Premiership being ring-fenced for at least two more seasons.

Clarke said: “It has not been an easy decision after 35 years but I believe it is the right decision for the club and myself.

“As a life member, loyal supporter and frequent user of the club, I will not be far away but will be relinquishing any committee responsibilities.

“I look forward to watching Cross Keys with our loyal supporters and continue our current success with Angie (Prangell, assistant secretary and marketing director) and all her on-field and off-field management teams.”

Vernall has also decided it’s time to stand down and will hand the reins to Peter Glastonbury, whose position of vice-chairman will be filled in the coming days.

“After 20-odd years of the strain of dealing with running the social club along with the rugby side of things and sponsorship it’s time to spend more time with my family,” said Vernall.

“I’ve had some good times with the club and I wish them all the best for the future.”

Keys start their Premiership campaign with a trip to champions Merthyr on Saturday, August 26 and will now have a new-look off-field set-up.

“On behalf of Cross Keys RFC I would like to thank both Chris and Colin for their long service and wish them all the best for the future,” said Prangell.
