Division One (Second XIs)

SUDBROOK Seconds’ fate was finally decided at the weekend as they were relegated despite a battling performance, writes Bob Cypher.

Rooted to the bottom of the table for most of the season, they enjoyed an unlikely victory against Cardiff Central CC.

Acting skipper Paul Adams said his team had performed well in the crunch clash in Cardiff.

“Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first, we built a respectable total and then bowled tightly, supported by excellent fielding,” he said later.

Contributions from Adams (25), Rob Simmonds (23), Charles Heaven (20) and Rob Supple (20) saw Sudbrook post a total of 168-9.

“When Cardiff Central took the field, we bowled tightly and took wickets on a regular basis,” Adams added,

Rob Simmonds (4 for 41), Rob Supple (2 for 29) and Gordon Voke (3 for 13), supported by some excellent catching, restricted Cardiff Central to 116 all out.

Despite the disappointment of relegation, Adams said it’s not all doom and gloom around Mill Lane.

“It’s disappointing but we can rebuild next season and come back stronger and target coming straight back up. It is what it is at the end of the day but we’ll see you next season.”
