NEWPORT’S batsmen hit their straps at Spytty Park last time out and more of the same would do very nicely away to Ammanford tomorrow.

Mark Wallace struck nine fours and a six in an 88-ball 101 against Ynysygerwn, while the former Glamorgan captain also shared a stand of 216 with Imran Hassan (77) for the third wicket.

A resounding 160-run triumph, Newport’s second success of the season following their defeat of Port Talbot the previous week, sees Matt Norris’ men sitting pretty in the league standings.

After three matches they are top of South Wales Premier League Division One, level on points with St

Fagans.

The royal wedding and FA Cup final might be on many people’s agenda tomorrow but for Newport’s players it is a trip west that takes centre stage.

The new season is only a few fixtures old but Newport already hold a 27-point

advantage over Ammanford.

Like Newport, Ammanford’s opening encounter of the 2018 campaign was abandoned.

They then tied their clash with Ynysygerwn, before last Saturday’s comprehensive 156-run loss to St Fagans.

In Division Two, after a week off, Malpas return to action at Llanelli, who beat Newport Fugitives on matchday three.

The Fugies will probably feel they left Stradey Park considerably worse off than they should have been.

Llanelli, thanks mainly to James Didcote’s 6-33, struggled to 135 all out in 49 overs, a score the Fugies must have felt was within their grasp.

But other than Didcote, who hit a run-a-ball 27, the visiting batsmen were

unable to get into their stride and fell 24 short of victory.

It’s a home fixture against Panteg tomorrow for the

Fugies, and they will be playing a team who haven’t had much luck of late.

Panteg’s first two games of the season were without a ball being bowled, and then their third outing ended in a heavy nine-wicket hammering by Clydach.

A tasty battle at the top of South East Wales League Division One is starting to brew.

Miskin Manor lead the way but Newbridge are matching them on points, Cardiff Gymkhana are one further back, and one behind them are Abergavenny.

Game of the day tomorrow sees the leaders host Abergavenny, who were just too good for Tondu last Saturday.

Newbridge enjoyed a second success of the campaign, overcoming Pentyrch by 35 runs, and it’s Pontypridd on home soil next.

Chepstow, fresh from a derby defeat of Usk, go to Pentyrch, while Sudbrook and Croesyceiliog visit Cardiff Gymkhana and Brecon respectively.
