SUDBROOK Firsts’ skipper Jamie Watkins praised his team for bouncing back strongly after losing at home last week, writes Bob Cypher.

After winning the toss, Watkins chose to bat first – a decision that soon proved a wise one.

“Matthew Spencer and Ross Lewis again took the score past 50 for the first wicket for the third consecutive match,” Watkins said.

“When Ross fell for 15, Matt was joined by Matt Kinchin and they set the foundation for a big score, Spencer finally falling for 59 to continue his fine early season form, while Kinchin kept the innings building with a magnificent 96.

“We finished on 245 all out after 49.1 overs and I felt we could defend that.

“Gymkhana’s reply never really got going as we took wickets at regular intervals throughout the innings.”

Watkins played a captain’s part as he and Dean Wallace took four wickets each, Gymkhana slumping to 153 all out after 42.5 overs..

“I was happy with how the boys reacted to a disappointing home defeat last week, especially the batting performance of Matthew Spencer who scored his second half-century in three outings, and Matthew Kinchin who struck a faultless 96.

“The bowling performance was led once again by Dean Wallace who picked up four wickets to take his tally to nine for the season.

“As a team we have played some good cricket in the first three games, but certainly have areas we can improve on so we hope to build on that when we host Brecon this Saturday.”
