EBBW Vale stalwart Mathew Williams has retired after 290 games at the heart of the Steelmen’s front row, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 36-year-old hooker spent 15 years at Eugene Cross Park after joining from his hometown club Oakdale, making his debut under Mike Ruddock.

The mobile forward, known as ‘Chunky’, stayed with Ebbw when they were relegated from the Premiership in 2010.

Diminutive Williams was a huge figure as the Steelmen rebuilt with four titles on the spin in Division One East and then the Championship.

After helping the club return to the top flight, he was then a key member of the squad that won the Premiership in 2016.

Injuries prevented the hooker from passing the 300 milestone and he has decided that the time is right to hang up his boots.

Williams said: “I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who was part of my time at the club, from the back room staff, committee, coaches, players and, of course, the best supporters in Welsh rugby.

"The club has been a major part of my life since I first joined in my last year of youth rugby in 1999 and will always be close to my heart.

“Rugby is about making memories, and some of my best memories are playing for this club, alongside close friends who will remain as lifelong friends.”
