NEWPORT coach Craig Warlow has set his side the challenge of proving their consistency when they welcome Bargoed to Rodney Parade on Sunday (kick-off 2.30pm), writes Chris Kirwan.

The Black and Ambers started the Premiership with a bang, triumphing with a bonus at Carmarthen Quins.

The 29-12 win would have raised a few eyebrows, yet Newport are known in the league for being dangerous on their day. The challenge is to produce such displays regularly, says Warlow.

"It was a really good win," said the former fly-half. "Everybody knows the capabilities of the Quins, they finished fifth last season and are a good barometer for us.

"We knew that we would have to go well and the boys were excellent. There were some errors but we are trying to play at a pace that makes the opposition uncomfortable, so they will happen.

"It was a really good win and that makes Sunday even more significant - one of our work-ons is to back up performances.

"I'm not sure what our perception is in the Premiership but I'd imagine it is that we are a team you can catch on a good day or a bad day.

"The boys work very hard throughout the week and we need to have a level of performance that reflects that more regularly."

The Bulls, who recruited heavily over the summer, suffered a heavy home 62-22 loss to Llandovery on opening day but Warlow isn't reading too much into that.

"Llandovery ran away with it but they are a side that can do that to anybody," he said.

"Bargoed will be really keen and always seem to enjoy coming to Rodney Parade.

"They have invested heavily and our mentality will be key because Bargoed will not give us anything and will look to put us under pressure at the set piece."

Newport are boosted by the return of full-back Geraint O'Driscoll from honeymoon.
