CHEPSTOW boxer Pat Mullane struck gold twice in Lithuania while representing Wales, writes Bob Cypher.

Mullane, just 16, produced a perfect performance for Wales at the International Junior Boxing Tournament in Kaunas, taking the gold medal and beating two home boxers in the process.

Steve Woods, the head coach at Chepstow BC, was delighted by the promising talent’s performance.

“Pat boxed Lithuanian Ericas Ratavicius and won the bout on an unanimous decision,” Wood said.

“The next day in the semi final, he took on Oleg Berovrien from Israel, and again had all five judges giving him the win.

“In the final Pat was up against Lukus Matukonis - another Lithuanian - and once again all five judges gave him the bout and he took the gold medal.”

If that was not enough, Mullane was also named the tournament’s best boxer and was presented with a large gold cup as his prize.

Woods was quick to praise Chepstow coach Doug Lewis for the part he has played in Mullane’s development.

“Doug spent a lot of time with Pat in the build-up to the tournament getting him to think more about how he boxes rather than just go in all guns blazing, and it clearly paid off,” he added.

Next for Pat Mullane is the Junior European tournament due to be held in Russia next month.

“I have already been told Pat has been selected as one of the team Wales will take to Russia and on the day he won gold we heard that Rosie Eccles also won a gold medal while representing Great Britain at a tournament in Turkey.

“This was a fantastic day for our club and one I will remember for many years to come.”
