Severn Tunnel Ladies 5 Caerphilly Castle 1

SEVERN Tunnel Ladies kept the pressure on leaders Cardiff Bluebelles with a convincing 5-1 victory at Rogiet on Sunday, writes Bob Cypher.

Tunnel went behind in the first half, the goal coming against the run of play.

But despite a missed penalty given for handball, the deficit didn’t last long and with strong running on both wings the home side soon equalised.

Tunnel skipper Nat Rostron again showed strength and skill to level before the impressive Shauna Pentney put them ahead with a smart finish.

Pentney drew appreciative cheers from her male clubmates on the sidelines for some of her footwork and skill and was a constant threat.

Two goals for Taylor Fitzgerald and a fierce shot from a tight angle by her sister Taran put Tunnel firmly in control.

Despite a late flurry by Caerphilly in a bid to reduce the deficit, there was never any real danger.

Millie Baxter and Sarah Bailey were again solid, Baxter’s ability to spot danger is a major factor and Bailey’s technical and tactical know-how was evident.

Although probably the smallest player on the pitch she has the ability and bravery to jump with the tallest of defenders and is a constant threat at corners and crosses.

Manager Sian Elizabeth Rees said she was delighted that tactics worked on in training had been applied in the match.

“We started slowly but I thought we were outstanding in the second half,” she said afterwards.

“There was a lot of sharp football and great balls through to our wingers.

“Our player of the match, Shauna Pentney, was instrumental in the comeback with fine skill and excellent passing.

“The team rose to the challenge and pressed the opposition with shot after shot, dominating ball possession for the rest of the match.

“The girls carried out the game plan to the letter and it paid dividends.”

Tunnel are home again this Sunday when they welcome Merthyr Town to Rogiet for a South Wales FA Women’s Cup Round 1 match.

Caldicot Town Ladies are also home on Sunday when they welcome Llangyfelach Ladies to the Jubilee (kick-off 2pm).
