NEWPORT have been warned that they can’t start as they finished last weekend if they are to avoid becoming Llanelli’s first scalp of the Premiership season on Sunday, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Black and Ambers have made a solid start to the season with wins against Carmarthen Quins, Bargoed and Bedwas with a sole disappointment against old rivals Cardiff in the capital.

Their form means the fourth-placed side are favourites to take the spoils at Parc y Scarlets against hosts yet to register a single point.

However, head coach Craig Warlow says their second half display in a 22-17 win against Bedwas, when their guests crossed at the death for a consolation bonus, is a warning.

"We were going pretty well but then the second 40 minutes was very poor," said the former fly-half. "You always want momentum but that half was not what we wanted.

"We won but the error count was terrible. If you turn the ball over more than 20 times then you struggle. We did that and our error count was rocketing towards 60.

"You cannot sustain pressure playing like that so we have to make sure our application is sound in Llanelli.

"We are a side that can challenge anyone if our mindset is right but if it is wrong then we will struggle."

Llanelli have lost to Ebbw Vale, Pontypridd, Merthyr and Llandovery in a tough start, scoring just 17 points and being nilled at Sardis Road and Church Bank.

"They are going to win some time so we have to make sure we do what we do well," said Warlow.

"The neutral would say we are the favourites but if we play like we did in the second half against Bedwas we would struggle to beat any team in the league."

Newport will give a break to wing Elliot Frewen after a bang in an aerial duel. Harri Lang is set to slot in out wide.
