BEDWAS aim to keep their unbeaten record against a club great when they entertain Cardiff this evening (kick-off 7.10pm), writes Chris Kirwan.

The Bridge Field side recorded their first win of the Principality Premiership season when edging out Bargoed last weekend and try to back that up against the Blue and Blacks in front of the BBC cameras.

In the visitors’ changing room will be Steve Law, who spent 16 years on the coaching staff of Bedwas before leaving for the capital at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Law, known as ‘Spot’, was an inspirational figure at Bridge Field but hasn’t fared well against his old friends.

Bedwas have won all three games against Law’s Cardiff, two in Gwent and one at the Arms Park.

“It adds a bit of spice and excitement but for us the main thing is building on last week’s win,” said head coach Stefan Sankala, who took over from Ian Gardner in the close season.

“The points are massive for both teams because Cardiff have probably underperformed so far. It should be a humdinger.

“There was a mixture of emotions in Bargoed because at certain stages we looked comfortable but then it turned into an arm wrestle.

“There was relief when the final whistle went and I think it has lifted a weight off our shoulders after an unforgiving month.

“We’ve not been too far away but have been masters of our own downfall with indiscipline - we are in double figures for yellow cards. If we are wiser and smarter we won’t be far away.”

Bedwas will also come up against former Dragons fly-half Steffan Jones, who swapped Bridge Field for the Arms Park last summer.

Bargoed were kicking themselves after losing at Bedwas last week when a repelled driving lineout at the death meant they had to settle for a pair of bonuses rather than a five-point haul.

The Bulls have home advantage again tomorrow when they entertain a Llanelli side buoyed by back-to-back wins against Newport and Carmarthen Quins.

Bargoed are one-from-bottom but are just six points away from the safety mark in the scramble to avoid the drop.
