YOUNG Chepstow Boxing Club member Oliver Russell began his career with a win at a show in Ton Pentre at the weekend, writes Bob Cypher.

Oliver, 12, was awarded the win over Cai Rosser from the Rhondda BC to delight Chepstow's head coach Steve Woods.

"This was a great start for Oliver but, unfortunately, another of our youngsters lost his bout," Woods added.

"Kayd Dean was in a rematch against Keelan Rosser, but although I thought he had won the last round, it was too little too late and the bout was awarded to his opponent.

"These club bouts are all about gaining experience and I was pleased with both boxers' performances.

"On Saturday Luke Conner, 16, competed in the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs competition.

"Luke had a bye to the final and, with this being his first bout back after a year without competing, it was a big ask.

"Luke broke his collar-bone in a skiing accident a year ago, but despite losing the bout he put in a tremendous performance.

"Our next show is in Caerphilly on November 22nd when Jerry Cash is due to box."
