Triple success for Monmouth’s cross-country aces

Harry Dawes, aged 12, led the way for Monmouth and clinched the overall individual junior boys’ crown in his maiden season competing for the senior school.

And Monmouth’s senior boys’ A team and the junior boys’ A team carried off their respective team titles to complete a memorable treble at Christ College, Brecon.

In total, Monmouth’s athletes bagged 23 medals during the season, which included events at Brecon High School, Crickhowell High School and Gwernyfed High School.

The Monmouth athletes travelled to Christ College for the final round of the league season knowing that individual and team medals were up for grabs.

In the senior boys’ race, Antony Wright was first home for Monmouth in fifth spot, ahead of club stalwarts Robbie Prosser-Wrench in sixth, and George Anthony, seventh.

The A team’s scoring was completed by Year 10 pupil Joshua Jones, in eighth, who finished strongly in the second half of the race.

Monmouth’s A team won the event on the day and the overall league title, while Robbie, George and Antony were fourth, fifth and sixth in the individual section.

The school’s B team also shone, taking the runners-up place overall.

A ferocious three-way battle in the junior boys’ race involved Monmouth duo Harry Dawes and Henry Evans, and Crickhowell’s Arthur Bell.

After gaining the lead midway through the final lap, Harry secured his first league victory with Henry coming a close second.

Will Morris and Oliver Lloyd also had fine runs, coming fourth and fifth respectively to seal an emphatic team success.

The junior boys’ B team of Gregor May (ninth), Kit Skailes (10th), Adam Fowler (11th) and Lewys Evans (14th) packed well to achieve an impressive second spot.

Individually, Harry won the overall title, while Henry was third, Oliver came fourth, and the consistent Kit, sixth.

The A team won the junior boys’ league title convincingly, with the B team finishing second and the C team, fourth.
