RONNY Kynes’ 200th Ebbw Vale appearance ended in defeat as Newport came from behind to claim a fifth win in as many games.

The Steelmen came into the game on the back of three defeats and Newport made a fast start at Eugene Cross Park thanks to Matt O’Brien’s penalty on four minutes. But the hosts’ response was emphatic.

They kept their patience playing through the phases until scrum-half Dai Jones found a gap of space on the left wing to go over in corner. Fly-half Rhys Jones was accurate with the conversion.

The hosts then took control of the game and forced a defensive mistake from Newport, which allowed centre Carl Meyer to pick up possession just inches from the try line and he gratefully touched down under the posts. Rhys Jones added the extras.

O’Brien missed the chance to haul Newport back in the game with a wayward penalty before opposite number Rhys Jones found the target with his kick from the tee to extend Ebbw’s lead.

However, Newport refused to give in and deservedly added to their tally when centre Chay Smith broke free on the half-hour mark to claim their opening try. O’Brien was on target with the conversion.

The Black and Ambers continued to pile on the pressure, which led to home skipper Kynes receiving a yellow card and his absence was felt. With him off the field, O’Brien and Elliot Frewen both went over for the visitors with the former adding both conversions.

Rhys Jones reduced the deficit to four points with the final kick of a thrilling first half.

The entertainment faded in the second half with both sides taking a more cautious approach but Newport sealed the win with a late O’Brien penalty – his 20th of the season.
