Monmouthshire Windows East Gwent League

Division One

ISCOED Tafarn manager Ashley Edinborough praised his team for rekindling their title bid with a 1-0 home victory over Thornwell Red & White A.

Edinborough admitted his side’s title hopes had taken a severe knock after picking up just one point in two games.

But the re-signing of hugely-experienced 'old boy' Jamie Green has brought steel to the Tafarn’s defence.

Green, a member of Sudbrook’s Gwent County League side, turned in a man of the match performance against Thornwell.

“We knew anything other than a win today would have ended our slim hopes of winning this league so full credit to the lads for stepping up to what was a huge challenge against a very good Thornwell side,” he said later,

After an even first half, Edinborough sent on new signing Josh Codd.

“Josh helped turn the game in our favour with some really clever link-up play and movement which the opposing defenders simply couldn't handle, so no surprise when he scored a quite fantastic winner, bending the ball first time into the top corner from 25 yards, leaving the keeper stranded, hands on hips, knowing he was beaten,” the manager added.

“Credit to Thornwell though, they kept coming at us, kept probing, but our defence turned in their best performance of the season, especially man of the match Jamie Green who, alongside Alex Ryall and Earl Broomfield, dealt with everything thrown at them.”

In the other match in Division 1, Rockfield Rovers beat Caldicot Town 2-1.
