BETH Gammon struck four goals as Severn Tunnel ended the first part of the season with a fine victory, writes Bob Cypher.

Gammon was a constant thorn in the visitors’ side, her speed and skill turning defenders,

Although Gammon took the scoring honours, there was much for Tunnel manager Sian Elizabeth Rees to be pleased with.

The visitors rarely troubled a defence in which Sarah Bailey, Millie Baxter and skipper Nat Rostron were solid, snuffing out the danger leaving keeper Chloe Leonard as a spectator, dealing with back passes and just one save from an ineffectual forward line.

“We played some great football, with moments of brilliance and some outstanding performances,” Rees said later.

“We were never under threat and playing 3-5-2 worked really well."

The manager also announced that Severn Tunnel player Tom Atkins has joined her as assistant trainee coach, along with Peter Baxter as fitness coach.

Tunnel’s other scorers were Shauna Pentney (2), Aisha Hobbs, Carys Soper and Taran Fitzgerald.

Their next match is on Sunday, January 6th, when they travel to Tredegar.

In the Welsh Women's League, Caldicot Town didn’t allow a late kick-off against Penybont to faze them.

They knew title rivals Aberystwyth Town had won 2-1 at third-placed Barry Town United by the time the match at Penybont began.

“It was a big weekend for us so victory at Penybont was very important to put us in the driving seat and we did it with style,” Town boss Luke Harris said.

“There were some excellent finishes from Kelly Cutler (2), Rianne Jones and Abbie Rose to seal the three points and keep us top of the table,” he added.

After this Sunday’s game at the Jubilee Ground, Town will visit Splott Albion on January 6th.
