Division 1 and 2 round-up

THORNWELL Red & White A took over at the top of Division 1, dethroning former leaders Rockfield Rovers in the process with a 10-3 home victory, writes Bob Cypher.

Goals by Wayne Duffield and Tobias Prettyjohn helped the home side to a 6-0 half-time lead, and although Rovers scored three times after the break through Dan Lane, Ryan Jones and Jack Jones, the three points were always Thornwell’s.

Watched briefly by Caldicot Castle manager Joe O’Brien and coach Steve Edwards after their home clash with Severn Tunnel fell victim to the recent weather - Thornwell turned on the style with four second-half goals.

That number could have been doubled had it not been for Rovers keeper Tim Circus, who made some excellent saves as Thornwell tried to improve their goal difference.

Duffield completed his hat-trick, rising to head a cross from the left past Circus before Tudor Morgan-Huggett, Andrew Skuse and a double - including a penalty - by substitute Matt Divers rounded off a comfortable victory.

Thornwell and Rockfield both have 29 points but Red & White’s goal difference of +47 could prove to be crucial at the end of the season.

Castle are third, three points behind with six games in hand over Rovers and two over Thornwell.

One point behind Castle are Iscoed Tafarn whose hopes where jolted with a 3-0 reverse at Caldicot Town, while Undy Athletic beat Tintern Abbey 2-1.

This Saturday, Castle A are at home to Caldicot Town, Iscoed Tafarn entertain Undy Athletic, Severn tunnel welcome Rockfield Rovers to Rogiet Sportsfield and Thornwell Red & White are home to Tintern Abbey.

In Division 2, the only match to survive the weather saw Portskewett & Sudbrook beat Thornwell Red & White B 2-1.

This week’s fixtures offer an interesting clash between Sudbrook CC and Monmouth Town, Portskewett & Sudbrook at home to Chepstow Athletic while Raglan FC welcome Chepstow Town.
