Alun Evans Cup quarter final

Severn Tunnel 2 Cardiff Met Development Squad 1

A SUPERB goal by top scorer Mikaela Roberts earned a place in the semi-finals for Severn Tunnel Ladies on Sunday, writes Bob Cypher.

Roberts chased a through ball, collected it wide out on the right flank before whipping a fierce drive past Met’s keeper from a tight angle.

The goal came shortly after Shauna Pentney had given Tunnel the lead, hooking the ball home as she fell under a challenge from FIVE Met defenders!

The second half was more even and Tunnel keeper Chloe Leonard was far busier, none more so than when she managed to stretch to tip a long shot over the crossbar.

But Met’s pressure finally paid off with what proved to be a consolation goal as Tunnel’s midfield held firm with Roberts always a threat on the break.

Tunnel boss Sian Elizabeth Rees was proud of her team’s performance.

“We were the underdogs against strong opposition but in what was a messy first half we battled and deservedly scored through Shauna and Mikaela.

“Chloe Leonard was an outstanding keeper and kept Met from scoring countless times.

“Bethan Gammon and Sarah Bailey were solid as always while Natalie Rostron was indestructible stepping into centre back with Sarah.

“Despite injuries and changes to formation, I think we rose to the occasion and I am very happy with the result.

“Shauna was our player of the match for her overall performance and the goal that put us in the lead.

“There was an excellent atmosphere and we look forward to our next match at Cwmbran Celtic next Sunday.”
