Monmouthshire Windows East Gwent League

Division 2

PORTSKEWETT & Sudbrook’s players are battling for places in the club’s first cup final for 11 years, writes Bob Cypher.

The club won the Gill Cup in 2007 when they beat Mathern 2-1 and now manager Aynsley Jones and coach Mike Panacci are hoping the players produce the goods in their remaining league matches to make selection for the Centenary Cup final on April 26th a lot easier.

“I have the team in my mind but it’s not finalised and there is still room for additions,” Jones said after seeing his men win 5-0 at Caldicot Castle B.

“It’s possible that one or two players will hit good form and make selection for the final a lot harder. It’s up to the players to show they want to be in the team to play Sudbrook CC in the final.”

Panacci agreed with Jones, adding: “I was pleased that our young keeper Declan Hubbard kept another clean sheet and our goals against Castle were well taken strikes.

“Jamie Cork was exceptional.”

Andrew Beames (2) began and ended the scoring with Jamie Cork (2) and Keiron Nesbitt strikes sandwiched in between.

In other games, Monmouth Town beat Chepstow Town 5-1 and Sudbrook CC won 6-1 at Chepstow Athletic.

Monmouth co-manager Paul Perrella was pleased the players had got back to winning ways.

“It was a good performance in their last home game,” he said.

“We have the best pitch in the league I think and it’s a shame we have played nearly double the away games as home - even the cup games have been away.”

Larsson Brown opened the scoring from an inch perfect cross from Greg Powell with Sam Williams and Jacob Perrella giving Monmouth a 3-0 lead at the break.

Further goals from Williams and Fin Thorp completed the victory.

“Now we’re looking forward to the first final this Friday, when we take on Sudbrook CC,” Perrella added.

The Fishwick Cup final is this Friday (April 5th) at Caldicot Town’s ground, kick-off 6.30pm.
