Chepstow 1sts (238-7) beat Brecon 1sts (120 all out) by 118 runs

LEWYS Jones gave a five-for performance as Chepstow kept up the pressure on local rivals Sudbrook by dismissing Brecon at Mathern Road, writes Bob Cypher.

The visitors won the toss and asked Chepstow to bat first, a decision which looked a wise one when the home team lost their first three batsmen for 47 runs.

But Carwyn James led the revival, hitting eight boundaries and one maximum from 88 deliveries before being stumped on 65.

Oliver Thornhill (23), an unbeaten 60 for Charlie Mitchell and Malith Madurasinghe (31) saw Chepstow post an attainable target.

In reply, Mitchell Harris struck early removing both Brecon openers for single-figure contributions and, although Will Trumper (29) and James Mitchell (25) offered resistance, Jones took 5-25 with one maiden in his seven overs.

Harris (2-25 and two maidens) and Sam Hope-Bell (2-36 off nine overs) saw Brecon’s innings end with 16 overs to spare.

“It was another solid performance all-round, although we were in trouble at 135-6,” Madurasinghe said later.

“But a crucial seventh wicket 88-run partnership between newcomer Charlie Mitchell and myself took us to a respectable total."
