BLACK Rock Rovers, Monmouthshire’s newest football club, has joined the East Gwent League ahead of the new season.
A breakaway group from Portskewett and Sudbrook FC, Rovers were formed a month ago – despite the immediate area already boasting competition from Sudbrook CC, Mathern Wanderers, Caldicot Town, Caldicot Castle, Rogiet, Underwood and Tippling.
Keith Henderson, acting as the new club’s publicity officer, explained: "There’s no animosity towards Portskewett, it’s just some of the lads wanted to go it alone. There’s 12 members here already but four or five more are thinking of joining us.
"There are a lot of clubs here already, but hopefully that will create some good-natured banter. We’re all trying to encourage business in the area."
Unable to adopt a black strip as this would clash with East Gwent League referees, Henderson has ordered a home strip in blue and yellow supplied by Team Sport in Newport and sponsored by The Cabin Centre. The club’s first team will play in the First Division next season.
Black Rock’s headquarters is the Sudbrook Non-Political Club. They are training weekly at Sudbrook Camp but will play home games from the autumn at Portskewett’s ground with the two clubs sharing costs.
Coaching the side is Paul Lovell, while Henderson is looking to arrange fundraisers including a poker night, disco and race night to pay for nets and fees.
A spokeswoman for Portskewett and Sudbrook FC confirmed there was no animosity over the split.
