Pooler to announce new signings

PONTYPOOL were this week preparing to announce two new Premiership signings which managing director Frank Stanton says will give the club a bit more "oomph".

Keeping tight-lipped on the names of his new boys until the ink dries on their deals, Stanton revealed to the Free Press: "We’ve spoken to a number of Premiership players and look to have signed at least two which should give us more oomph. It’s 95 per cent done now but until it’s all gone through we can’t say any more.

"What I can say is we’ve been mainly looking at trying to strengthen the back line with a wing and a centre, to hopefully give us a bit more get-up-and-go.

"We’re also looking at a couple of forwards, a prop and a hooker – not so much for the first team but to give us a bit of cover."

On the current crop, which kept Pooler in the Premiership, Stanton added: "I think we’ve spoken to most of the squad now and nearly all of them have re-committed themselves."

He said the coaching staff is gearing towards having around 28 players for the start of the season on the books.

"Last season, even with all the injuries, we had around 28 players and that number gives us some wriggle room with four more players to bring us to the 32-man maximum if we need it," Stanton added.

The newly-bolstered squad will get together for the first time for pre-season at the end of this month.
