Town prepare for promotion push

CHEPSTOW Town will be making a "big push" to return to the Welsh League next season.

That is according to chairman Billy Davies, who was speaking after Town's end-of-season awards night.

Town finished fifth in the Gwent County First Division this year under the leadership of Billy's son Ian, Chris Lillygreen and co-manager Wayne Samuals. And with a host of young talent waiting in the wings, Davies Snr hopes it is just a matter of time before they are promoted back to the Welsh League.

He said: "For the last 10 games we played 11 men all under the age of 21. Five years ago we didn't have an under-18 side but we're really seeing the benefit.

"Virtually all the first and second team players are local boys now and we'll be making a big push next year to hopefully go back up."

Over 100 people attended the evening at the Chepstow Hotel where under-14s manager Nick Robinson was named clubman of the year.

Davies said: "Three years ago his boys didn't win one game but he's turned them around and this year they won the League and Cup double. He's really got them going."

The first team players' player of the year was Dan Saunders with the managers' award going to Julian Saunders. Shane Rutherford picked up both awards for the seconds who finished third in East Gwent League Division One and won the Benevolent Cup under Bob Trigg.

Third team players' player of the year was Duncan Rands with Mark Warbey manager Dean White's choice. Jonathan Blamire and James Trigg won the under-18s awards.
