MONMOUTH Cricket Club slipped to fourth place in the Worcestershire County League Division Two after suffering one of their heaviest defeats in recent memory.
They went down by 159 runs at Worcester Dominies, a lively spell of seam bowling from Sajid Ali (5-53) the undoing of the visitors as they fell well short of their target of 330.
Monmouth did themselves no favours as they collapsed from 50-1 to 59-6 despite an impressive 33 from opener Ian Morgan, which included eight boundaries.
Jonathan Jones (44) and all-rounder David Teague (43) showed some resistance but were unable to dig their team out of the hole, eventually being dismissed in the 31st over of their chase for just 170.
Earlier in the day, Monmouth were put to the sword as Dominies piled up an imposing 329-7 on a scorching afternoon at Evendine Close.
Matt Brace (110) and Chris Miles (68) were the backbone of the Dominies’ innings as the pair shared a 176-run partnership for the second wicket.
It could have been a much larger score for the home team had it not been for Teague who produced one of the few positives for Monmouth on the day. Considering the excellent batting track and lightning-fast outfield, the bowler produced a magnificent spell to finish with figures of 5-79 from 14 overs.
Despite breaking the mammoth second-wicket stand, Monmouth failed to stem the flow of runs and thanks to a late onslaught from Abdul Riaz (35 not out) and Ali (15 not out) the home side were lifted to a daunting total which was to prove beyond Monmouth.
The result means that the Dominies have leapfrogged Monmouth to go third in the table with the season reaching the halfway stage.
Monmouth will be hoping to re-ignite their league campaign when they host mid-table Hagley at the Sports Ground on Saturday. l An unbroken 134-run stand between Matthew Jones (93 not out) and Tom Baker (69 not out) led the high-flying second team to an impressive six-wickets win over Worcester Dominies Seconds in a high-scoring encounter.
In reply to Dominies’ 264-9, the youngsters guided the third-placed side to their target with four overs to spare.
